Ambassador Sondland Remarks (as delivered) at
Press Conference on the Occasion of the Visit of the USS Donald Cook
Tuesday, February 26, 2019
Thank you Ambassador Volker, Commander Powell, Ambassador Yovanovitch.
I’m Gordon Sondland, President Trump’s Ambassador to the European Union, and I am here for a very, very important reason.
We’re here today to show unity and support with our partners, our friends, and our brothers and sisters in the European Union toward unwavering and unmoving support for the people of Ukraine and for Ukrainian democracy.
And to that end, I want to thank my friend, President [of the European Commission] Juncker, High Representative and Vice President Mogherini — and my colleague and friend, Jean-Christophe Belliard, for travelling here with us today to show our support and appreciation for the people of Ukraine.
We’re here to counter Russian aggression on the shores of the Black Sea and to support the independence, territorial integrity, and most importantly, the European orientation of Ukraine.
Our friends in the European Union, represented by Jean-Christophe Belliard, are working hand in hand with us.
The United States of America and the European Union [are] a force for peace and democracy.
And now I would like to invite Jean-Christophe to say a few words.
Thank you very much.
