U.S., EU Hold Workshop to Discuss eHealth Policies, Challenges

The European Commission and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, in conjunction with the European-American Business Council, organized the first EU-U.S. eHealth Policy Workshop in Brussels, Belgium, on May 10, 2007. This one-day workshop on eHealth -- healthcare practices supported by information and communication technologies (ICT) -- focused on interoperability, certification and improving patient safety and healthcare quality through ICT. Panellists and open discussions focused on presentation of current activities in EU and US and possible topics for mutually beneficial transatlantic cooperation. The discussions and set up for cooperation continue after the workshop on topics of mutual interest such as those mentioned above and others such as promotion of international standards, security and privacy policies. The event brought together 110 people, including high-level speakers from EU institutions and Member State governments, the U.S. government, academia and industry.
