U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Nancy Nord
(right in photo) and European Consumer Protection Commissioner
Meglena Kuneva met in Brussels April 3, 2008. In a joint press point
afterwards, they fielded questions
on global safety standards, joint U.S.-EU initiatives toward China,
and the detection and disposal of unsafe products. They both
emphasized shared goals on consumer product safety and a commitment
to close, ongoing dialogue to narrow regulatory differences and
improve safety standardization throughout the production chain. They
said they would both be traveling to China this year, and
Commissioner Kuneva invited Chairman Nord to attend the European
Consumer Safety Week in November 2008, where Chinese representatives
will also be present.
